Dorien is a partner at Brinkhof, specialising in information law with a particular focus on copyright, database law, surveillance and electronic communications. Her expertise extends to advising media and other companies in these areas, including addressing the intersection of these legal aspects with other rights and interests. Dorien’s proficiency also encompasses providing guidance to international tech and telecom companies regarding demands from investigative bodies and orders from intelligence agencies. Her registered area of law with the Dutch bar is information law.
Member of the Copyright Commission
Since 2022, Dorien has served as a member of the Copyright Commission, providing crucial insights and recommendations on copyright legislation and policy to the Dutch government and parliament. She was involved in four notable proceedings involving GeenStijl and Sanoma, which centred around hyperlinks to a leaked Playboy report by Britt Dekker.

Ervaring & nevenactiviteiten
Regelmatig geeft Dorien cursussen aan een gespecialiseerd publiek. Ze is vaste spreker over online platforms bij de jaarlijkse PAO-cursus Actualiteiten Auteursrecht en de Studiedag Onrechtmatige Perspublicaties. Ook is ze actief lid van het Amerikaanse Media Law Resource Center (MLRC), o.a. als co-organisator van een Europees mediarechtcongres. Dorien zet zich in voor de emancipatie en representatie van vrouwen in haar vakgebied via onder meer de internationale non-profitorganisatie Chiefs in IP (ChIPs) waarvoor ze in 2022 een Dutch Chapter oprichtte. Dorien studeerde aan het Instituut voor Informatierecht (IViR) van de Universiteit van Amsterdam en aan Fordham Law School (New York). Ze is in 2008 beëdigd.

Dorien adviseert over nieuwe, met name Europese, wetgeving zoals de Digital Services Act (DS), de DSM Auteursrechtrichtlijn, de Richtlijn audiovisuele mediadiensten en andere verticale instrumenten gericht op het bestrijden van schadelijke content online. Enkele recente voorbeelden zijn:
- Het ondersteunen van een DSA-complianceproject, o.a. bij een internationale Cloud-aanbieder, een socialmediabedrijf en een non-profitorganisatie.
- Het adviseren over de recente (voorstellen voor) Europese Verordeningen over de bestrijding van online terrorisme en kindermisbruik, mede gelet op bestaande vrijwillige maatregelen van een cliënt.
