Rik is a lawyer at Brinkhof specialising in national and international patent litigation. He particularly enjoys taking on complex, international litigation. Rik is deeply involved in the developments surrounding the Unified Patent Court (UPC). He actively participates in UPC mock trials, delivers courses, and contributes to publications focusing on the UPC system. Furthermore, Rik advises clients on matters related to the UPC. Rik has served as an editor on the Kluwer Patent Blog since its inception. This widely read website features patent publications from a diverse team of international lawyers. In addition to editing contributions, Rik also publishes his own articles on the blog.

Rik studied Information Law at the University of Amsterdam and spent a semester in San Francisco. Prior to being admitted to the bar in 2006, Rik worked as a researcher at the Institute for Information Law, focusing on the interaction between technology and law. The passion he developed during his research now permeates his work at Brinkhof, enhancing the firm’s litigation practice on a daily basis.

  • Dow Chemical v Organik Kimya, litigation concerning the misappropriation of trade secrets;
  • for Boston Scientific, several patent cases concerning medical devices, including stents, heart valves and catheters;
  • in Johnson&Johnson v Abbvie, patent litigation concerning anti-psoriasis antibodies;
  • representing the holders and implementers of Standard Essential Patents in various FRAND cases.
