Rien is a lawyer at Brinkhof and litigates on Dutch and European patents in the Dutch courts and at the European Patent Office. Thanks to his solid technical background, he excels in handling litigation concerning technically complex matters, particularly in the fields of electrical engineering, software patents and telecommunications, including standard-essential patents. The area of law Rien has registered with the Dutch bar is intellectual property.

Clients highly appreciate Rien for his deep understanding of technology and his skill in applying that understanding in the courtroom. Rien was recognised as a “Rising star” in the 2019 edition of Legal 500 and in the 2020/21 edition of IP Stars. His clients include the smartphone manufacturers Xiaomi, Oppo and Wiko, as well as the electronics group Delta Electronics. Rien is fluent in English and German.
Experience & ancillary activities
Prior to obtaining his LLM in Information Law in 2014, Rien trained as a computer scientist, having obtained his MSc degree in Telematics (networking technology) from Twente University in 2007. Rien is a member of the professional association AIPPI (International Association for the Protection of Intellectual Property) and of The Sedona Conference, where he actively contributes his expertise.
