“A highly regarded litigator and certainly one of the best for IP.” – Who’s Who Legal
Kurt Stöpetie (admitted to the Bar in 1988) has been involved in numerous trademark, design and unfair competition court cases, as well as many press and advertising law cases. He litigated various cases before the European Court of Justice, including on the direct effect of European law in arbitration proceedings and the direct effect of the TRIPs treaty in national law.
Chambers Europe wrote: “The impressive Kurt Stöpetie […] specialises in all aspects of IP, as well as advising on portfolios and strategy, and is noted for having ‘helped fight his clients out of some desperate situations”. Kurt has also been described as “a dedicated, knowledgeable and straightforward adviser“, and “He delivers prompt, thorough advice“. Legal500 wrote about Kurt: “always brings a light touch to even the most complex and intractable of problems”.
Describing him as “one of the sharpest arrows in [Brinkhof’s] quiver”, WTR 1000 notes Kurt as “a ‘tactically smart lawyer with a practical and commercial approach’, and someone who can ‘cooperate with the other side while aggressively going after – and getting – a great result for his client at the same time’. Litigation and enforcement is his bread and butter, but companies also seek him out for his incisive strategic advice.”
Kurt was one of the founders of Brinkhof. Before starting Brinkhof, Kurt was the head of the IP practice at Stibbe. Kurt graduated from Utrecht University in 1986 and subsequently completed the Grotius Academy in 1987.
