Rutger Stoop (admitted to the Bar in 2013) is active in the field of intellectual property, focusing on trademark, design and copyright law. He litigates and advises in particular on all aspects of product design, (protected) product designations and the protection of brands and trade names in general. He also has broad experience in proceedings and opinions regarding advertising law, trade secrets, domain names and the general civil litigation practice. He represents various clients from a broad range of industries, such as fashion, toys, industrial and consumer goods, food and beverages, automotive, e-commerce and entertainment.
After joining Brinkhof, Rutger has gained extensive experience in (cross-border) proceedings before both the Dutch District Courts, Courts of Appeal and the Supreme Court, as well as before the administrative IP authorities (Benelux Office for Intellectual Property and European Union Intellectual Property Office).
Rutger is an active member of several branch organisations, such as the Benelux association for Trademark and Designs rights (BMM, also member of the Legislation Committee and several working groups), the International Association for the Protection of Intellectual Property (AIPPI, active as chairman of the Young Members committee), and the International Association of Young Lawyers (AIJA, member of the IP TMT Commission). He is recognised as a Rising Star since 2018 in the annual guide MIP IP Stars, and since 2021 also in the Legal 500.
Rutger graduated from the Radboud University Nijmegen in 2013, where he completed the Corporate law master, specialising in intellectual property. He wrote his master’s thesis on the enforcement of patents by non-practicing entities, for which he studied the situation in the United States and the Netherlands.
