Jan Brinkhof

Jan specialises in intellectual and industrial property law, focusing on patent law. As a lawyer Jan represents and assists clients in litigation and in international strategic planning and coordination. He is a successful litigator. He is also active as a part-time professor and as arbitrator in patent matters.

Jan was a judge from 1976 to 2000; in the last 8 years of this period as the Presiding Judge of the IP Chamber of the Court of Appeal of The Hague, dealing with patent cases in particular (in the Netherlands patent cases are exclusively heard by the courts in The Hague). Jan was an external member of the Enlarged Board of Appeal of the European Patent Office from 1992 until 2000. Jan has been a part-time professor of Industrial Property Law at the University of Utrecht since 1987. He has been publishing for years about patent and trademark law in particular. He often acts as a speaker both at conferences and at client organised seminars. 

In Chambers Europe Jan is recommended as “the leading light for the new generation of Dutch patent lawyers” (2009).
